El Capitan: Changing The Vanguard

coffeebreakchat

Haffleheim Black is my Captain toon, and he’s given me so much joy this month and last. I’ve had a blast playing him in group content. When I first started playing the Cappy, it was such a boring grind and it made me doubt if I’ll ever reach a point in time where I’d be having fun with this guy. Now at 85, I’m having no regrets. I relate players who play their captains well to football teams that possess star catalyst players. In football, or soccer if you will, every team has it’s ‘Number 10′, the playmaker. They dictate the game, pulling the strings and offers that something special to get the job done. I see captains in the exact same way. We make good groups play that extra bit better ; we push DPS a little higher, we heal when we need to, and if poop hits the fan we definitely have a few skills to try and save the situation. Reading the forums, class guides and class round-tables only gave me a little info about what to expect but nothing compares to the experience of actually going out and learning how to play my captain in group situations. And so that’s exactly what I’ve been doing with him. I’ve been joining PUG groups a lot lately in the hopes of actually acquiring some decent gear and gold drops. At the rate I’m going with my cappy, I definitely consider him my main toon now.

Haffleheim

He’s not where I’d like him to be yet in terms of gear and virtues. Which brings me to the other thing I wanted to talk about, virtues and it’s importance in end-game. A recent heated debate on Riddermark’s GLFF channel told me all I need to know about what it actually takes to get into PUG raids. Virtues are key some say, as they give you that extra bit of mits when it matters most. Others say bugger virtues, it’s how well you know your class, and if you’re a decent and well geared player. The minority in that discussion said player attitude is the deciding  factor. A player who is willing to listen, learn, and take in constructive criticism will be well received in raids, regardless of having the experience or gear. Personally, I feel it’s a well balanced mix of all three factors. My first PUG raid for example ; Way back in 75 land I responded to a raid PUG hoping to get my Champ his ToO locks. My virtues were meager at best in the 9-10s. I was pretty decently geared. Full Draigoch teal armor and crafted Theodred jewelries. I knew it was a far cry to get in and that the leader who was inspecting me would go “meh”. So I told him the truth, that although I had no experience in the ToO raids, I was willing to listen and learn. I know how play my champ, and would do anything that was asked of me. I urged him to give me a try. So he did, and it went pretty smooth for my part. That’s one way of getting in raids lol. What about you folks? What do you think is important in cementing your place in raids, Kin or PUGS? And are Virtues all that important?

Finally, back to my cappy and the future. Right now, all I want to do is farm GB/Annuminas/Dale/School/Library for Seals, gold drops, and hopefully get my Erebor raid locks before a new update. Oh that reminds me, just a couple of days ago, I joined a PUG ‘speed run’ that wanted to clear out all 3 GB instances. At first glance, the group had a tank and a healer. 30 minutes into the runs, the tank was pulling everything he could and the healer was traited for DPS. That was a high octane run that I’m not going to forget soon. By the end of the run, I left the group upset. It wasn’t how I like to play the game, rushing through everything. But now I think back and have a lot to thank those players for. I realized that in those high adrenaline moments where fights are chaotic and fast, I learned how to adjust my playing, adapt to the situation and it really did test my knowledge of my class to the limit. I came out of that experience a better player.

I love coffee break chats. I get to ramble for the sake of rambling. So till I experience more stuff to write about, happy gaming everyone.

Thoughts About The Moors

lotro opinion

Personally, I feel that being a casual solo player out in the moors at the moment is a lose-lose situation. Recent updates have seen the Moors morph into this huge boiling pot of raid vs raid scenarios, storming keep after keep, outpost after outpost for all the buffs, then converging at a designated spot to battle it out with raid sized opponents. Once a loser is determined (losing side have players logging off due to ego/frustration issues/logging to the winning side to join the Commy/infamy/glory farm), the playground bullies then comb the map to gank lowbies and solo players, or form 1v1 circles before eventually calling it a night. This is what the new moors have turned into. A systematic grind fest at best, or at least on my server it is.

Right now for me there just isn’t enough incentive to go out there on my own or with a buddy or two. I definitely miss the old Moors.

Dev Chat Update 10 Snippets & Opinion

lotro opinion

This month’s LOTRO Dev Chat on Twitter just wrapped and there were plenty of good questions asked and answered. A lot of information regarding Update 10 were given when asked. Update 10 hits Bullroarer next week according to Devs, but here are other little snippets with accompanying thoughts.

1. Wardens will now use Agility as their main stat

- Not a surprise to me; I’ve read about it somewhere on the forums previously. Initial thoughts were of doubt because of the various might+vit gear that Wardens and my own Warden, Dagenath has already acquired. But it’s going to be a scramble now for me to go fishing for Agility jewelry. I’m not so worried about armour, because Medium armour do have Agility variants anyways. Relics on my LI’s will also have to be thrown out the window however(Might ones stacked). I can see the logic to this, based on Wardens and their evasion tanking, but we’ll see how it goes. I’ll pop on Bullroarer and play around with it.

2. Dread removed from landscape defeats

- Interesting but welcome change. Mind you I don’t die a lot on the landscape (lol) but solo-ing Bugud on my Cappy occasionally gets me. Also, I tend to go AFK so much at random times that I simply just sit out there and have boars and other buggers chew me dead. Having no dread from annoying defeats like that will definitely be nice. Thanks I guess.

3. Fate potency increase and power pools standardized

- Now the Devs didn’t elaborate too much on this and it had me wondering. I don’t play toons at end game that uses Fate a whole lot, so I am not entirely sure what this change does. As for the power pools being standardized, one of the Devs did say it makes class changes in future a lot easier, and doesn’t make the difference in power pools between classes seem random. O.0? My thoughts exactly. I did see a Hunter with 6K power the other day though..

4. New/Existing/Scaled Instances receiving new loot

- Very Important change for my Kinship and I. We have been running plenty of instances for lootz(who doesn’t love lootz!??) and frankly the variations are disappointing and some of the old scaled ones are downright pathetic (DRAKESPLITTER!!?? ARE YOU FUGGING KIDDING ME TURBINE?). Running these instances are what’s keeping my kinship alive at the moment, so kudos for adding new shinies to keep the fires burning. Thank you.

5. 2nd part of instance cluster introduced

- Same sentiment as above. New content=longer interest. However, I can’t help but wonder why the hell won’t they just add the entire instance cluster into the expansion in the first place. Maybe, I just answered my own question.

6. New armour sets

- Saw this one coming. Was bound to happen. Now keep your eyes out on the difference between stats of the Hytbold raid level gear and the new ones. Let’s see how it holds up with the new instances. As for the BG sets…(insert sarcastic comment here).

7. No new Epic Book with Update 10

- A little let down with this one. But considering where we last stopped in the Epics, it’s only sensible that we continue it with either a new region or something huge that takes us away from the Eastemnet. What I can’t say for sure, but Devs have said that a huge Epic Book will be coming in Update 11. Interesting.

8. First Age LI’s and of Tarnished Symbols

- Yeap, it’s coming. Brace yourselves for a whole new grind end-gamers. Wonder if it will be called a Tarnished Symbol of the Elder King. As a result, Devs did not answer my question but have done so indirectly by saying that Tarnished Symbols of Celebrimbor can be attained via marks, meds, and seals(Skirmish Camp) after the update. This is good news for anyone at 85 who has yet to get one, so start saving your currencies and start running skirms and instances to stock up on some! You’ll need the upgrade. Having gotten 4 before the new year(lucky SOB I know), I’m decently geared on my Champ and Cappy but will still be getting a few more for alternative weapons for PVP and different builds.

And that’s about all the info of Update 10 that came out from the Dev Chat. There were plenty of other questions about cosmetics, housing, mounted combat etc and you can find the full transcript here. Cheers everyone.

To Dress A Thane For Battle

lotro opinion

After long spells of rebuilding the ruined town of Hytbold and driving off the evils that has plagued the Eastemnet for far too long, Adhrean Black, Champion amongst men and leader of the Mercenaries has finally received the title of Thane. Hence, my first foray into the world of outfitting that I would like to share with you the Free Folk of Middle Earth. What does a Thane wear to battle? What does he suit up in when not in the heat of combat? With the new year comes new inspirations for myself in LOTRO, and among the new things I vowed to change was the cosmetics of my main characters. Adhrean had been using his black outfit since late 2011, and it’s about time I dressed him up in something new, befitting a Thane. So now I proudly present to you, the battle garments of Thane Adhrean! Do say something nice, I’m new to the cosmetic world =p

Thane Adhrean

“I bid you welcome to my mead hall!”

Adhrean Black is a Man Champion of Rohan. Born into a family of merchants and traders in the Riddermark, his nomadic lifestyle eventually brought him to the peaceful town of Bree where he sought out the Mercenaries. A promise of a better life; dangerous, bountiful and full of adventure convinced him that his rightful place in Middle Earth was by their side.

The main colors of Adhrean’s battle garments are black, and the shiny silver of his chain mail armor. Combination of two I feel brings out the colors of a true warrior on the battlefield, standing out easily amongst friend or foe. The large star upon his chest symbolizes a leader who leads by example, a shining hope to allies as foe upon foe falls at his feet. For head gear, he dons half-helm, half-mask. By Mercenary tradition, important members and leaders keep their faces masked in fights.

An alternative battle cloak can be seen above. The greyish red color represents the bloodshed of battle ahead, or a battle fought and won. Atop his destrier, Edread, Adhrean looks a mighty Thane, ready to ride out into battle, seeking to destroy all who dare cause harm in his beloved homeland.

Destrier2

A Mercenary he may be, but the ways of the Rohirrim he will forever keep. Forth, Eorlingas!

Head: Leather Helm of the Stoic Stag dyed black (ROI Quest Reward)

Shoulders: Fine Grey Company Wrap dyed black (Epics Vol.III quest reward)

Chest: Hauberk of Forgotten Hope dyed black (Anuminas Barter, Captain)

Hands: Blademaster’s Gauntlets dyed black (Moria Champion Armour Barter)

Legs: Leggings of the Resilient Warrior dyed black (PVMP 85 Champion Armour Barter)

Feet: Brushed Leather Boots dyed brown (Skirmish Camp, Cosmetics Barter)

Cloak/Back: Wood Wonderer’s Cloak washed (LOTRO Store)

Alternate Cloak/Back: Silky Cloak of Destruction washed (ROI quest reward)

And there you have it, Adhrean’s official garb for 2013! Liked it? Disliked it? Leave a comment! Cheers all

I Never Knew You Could Pause Lotro.

Managed to clog in a decent amount of Lotro time before it decided to ‘pause’. We were stuck in place with a massive lag which lasted for at least 5 whole minutes. We soon found out that it wasn’t just the Riddermark, but a server-wide issue. There were a ton of unhappy people ; 12 people who were a minute away from beating Saruman T2 for the first time were wiped and thus did not manage to complete the raid for the deeds. Many other incidents as such were starting to pour out from the chat channels and I feel sorry for you folks. I wonder what was causing it. All I had to do was re-log in to get rid of it, but now I have been kicked out completely which is why I’m here cooking up a post. I wonder if this has something to do with the Farmer’s Faire? Well if that’s the case then it’s alright, will be waiting to see what it’s all about later when I log back in. If I can log back in.

So what brought me to play Lotro today was the decision to purchase the Legendary Edition of Riders of Rohan. Impulsive decision, yes, but at the same time the prospect of everything Rohan just hit me at such velocity that I just had to give in. I was also tempted to give the horse session play a go. 2k Turbine points was a nice touch, considering at the start none was offered. Kudos to Turbine for listening to the community there. The Outriders Token is a nice addition, alongside the Crystal and cosmetics. Can’t wait to get back in game and level my Cappy up to 75 then, as I want to keep my options of which toon take into Rohan first, open.

Steed of the Eastemnet

If you have been following this blog for some time, you probably know already that I’m addicted to steeds in this game. And this one looks to be by far the best looking steed of 2012 for me. Great to be adding this to my collection. And knowing that the skin of this steed will be available for the War Steed is a bonus. The accompanying Eastemnet armor on my Champ Adhrean as shown below is also a thing of beauty.

So with that, I know from now till September the 5th, I’ll be grinding in style. Till the next post, cheerios.

UPDATE: Contains Moderate Peril has posted a summary of the reports since Lotro was shut down earlier today. Read about it here. It looks to me, like we’re under attack…

COUNTER UPDATE: As of right now GMT +8 (6.40PM) the Lotro servers are back in business.
